California Coastal Cleanup Day
This morning I participated in the 21st Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. I was kinda bummed that I had to work and couldn't participate in the day after cleanup for the 4th of July this year, so when I heard that there was a cleanup today, I decided that it would be awesome for me to join in.
I was pretty amazed by the amount of trash I picked up. It was kind of rediculous. In the little time I was there, I collected 2 full bags - 5 lbs worth of trash. I could not believe the stuff I was finding. I think the most shocking thing though was that the amount of cigarette butts. I cannot tell you how many cigarette butts I found. I lost count after a while, but I'm pretty sure it was well in the hundreds. It was disgusting. I can't say that I'm going to turn into the Ciragette Butt Nazi, but I think I've decided to be a little bit more vocal towards family and friends who throw their butts on the ground. Honestly, I don't think people take the time to stop and think about how bad the cigarette butt situation is. It's pretty bad.
Anyways, I did my good deed for the day and I gotta say, I'm pretty proud of myself. In the two years I've lived here, I've spent many many hours enjoying the beaches of San Diego, it was about time I gave something back.
